Assignment Handout for week of March 29 - Dream Life
Introduction to House on Mango Street
In the novel House on Mango Street, the main character Esperanza, who is a young Mexican-American girl, struggles with feeling insecure about the house her family lives in because it is small, run down, and not big enough for her large family. She dreams of a different house and a different life than the one she has.
In this exercise you will follow in Esperanza’s footsteps and think about your own “dream life”. Maybe it is not that different than the one you already have, or perhaps it is not like your current life at all. Please answer the following questions below in paragraph form and be prepared to share your ideas with the class.
Please answer these questions in paragraph form (at least 4-6 sentences).
Dream Life:
1) Describe in detail what your dream house looks like? What is inside the house? What does the outside of your house look like? Is your house on a lot of land, or in a city? Try to find a picture of your house on the internet to share with the class.
2) In your dream life, where would you live (in the U.S.? what state? or would you live in another country?)
3) What is your profession in your dream life (explain in detail)?
